Quest of the Sun Key-a few left

Quimby's got a few of the remaining Quest of the Sun Key Modules that were made for the Rollin' Hatin' show. There was a price mark up so the artists could get back the little fraction of the time and materials cost they put in to this project, and it is truly amazing. So grab one while you can it will never be reprinted-I've been told, and despite what it says in the description at Quimby's there are only three of these left at the store as I type this right now and I doubt they will be here by weeks end.

Unofficial Art Fair Weekend Happening

10 PM @ Co-Prosperity Sphere
32nd Place and Morgan St.
$10 donation

Extended gallery hours during the We’re Rollin’ They’re Hatin’ exhibition makes this a perfect place to stop by after the NFO EXPO, Art fairs, photo shows and whatnot to enjoy some advanced performances by today’s now people.

Performance Program:

Aleks and the Drummer
Farfisa, drums and love. Miles Raymer of the Chicago Reader says, “(Deric) Criss favors Krautrock rhythms cranked up to punk-rock speeds, and (Aleks) Tomaszewska likes elaborate minor-key melodies and ethereal, abstract vocals.”

Beau Wanzer
Immensely danceable beats, minimal synth sounds and
playful analog wankery.

Mbulu (waterbabies)
The Baron of St. Louis collaborates with members of Chicago’s avant-jam band Waterbabies. Electrosynth sounds, abstract noodling, spacy reverb and African rhythms all get in a big drunken agrument and get loopy.

Triangle
Triangle began in Minnesota, with Amanda W, a Fargoan on upright bass, garage-sale keyboards and a yellow jumpsuit; Brian T on synthesizers and unloved electronics and various questionable ideas about how to make it all talk and Susan L, another Fargoan with a taste for nice BMX bikes and a happening record collection. Since, they’ve reloacated to Oakland CA, where they’ve added additional members. The Triangle ship, rolling through seas of gnarled electronics, forgotten waves off the AM dial, shanties of 70s freak Germany, and scratchy transmissions from 80s Detroit, took on a few old salts, namely Jon Otto Schroeder on music box and Mark Treise on tenor bass and Elias Reitz on percussions. They all help to bail.

the Dolphin
The Dolphin creates dynamic music based on minimal improvised structures and a growing library of sounds and loops. Recorded tracks are usually performed differently live; songs transform in color, direction, and tone. Due to the large amount of live processing that occurs, the tracks are never quite the same. The Dolphin is subject to the will of the three individual band members that are aggressively attacking each other’s sound. Tense. Upon hearing their performance at Version>06, Peregrine Kodiak commented that they sound like Konono, but it was probably just the drugs talking.

DJ Clent, DJ Spinn & DJ Scrabblor
This is the real deal. Get droked out with a crazy juke dance party with these three South Side DJs. Watch my feet!

RPG OG'S: Take Two: David C. Sutherland III

Next up in our salute to RPG OG'S in David Sutherland III. David's early art was an integral part of the D&D aesthetic. His drawings were at times crude and amateur but that is what gave them their charm. David's work made D&D feel accessible and imaginative. As the game became more mainstreamed and commercialized, his work was down played and overall the character of D&D became more and more of Frazetta clone style with buff men and air brushed poses. David passed away back in 2005, but the effects he left on early gaming continue to this day.

THE ZINE

we are printing up a limited amount of 17x22 newsprint zines for the show featuring artwork by 17 of the artists in the show including maya hayuk, french, kevin hooyman, jessie rose vala, the little friends of printmaking and others.

FRIDAY APRIL 20TH DETAILS

Program of events

7pm “Nothin’ Special”
A video screening curated by Jacob Ciocci of Paper Rad

One hour of videos from the sad lands of post-internet contemporary USA. Some of these artists I have met, others are YouTube apparitions, and others are complete mysteries, discovered, re-discovered, and lost again inside the internet’s caverns. Original or stolen footage, homemade or mass-produced, monumental or completely boring, there is no difference. A magical moment becomes meaningless, then rediscovered as a powerful ghost, then buried again-- all in the blink of an eye. Banal vs. Extraordinary, Derivative vs Original, Insane vs Normal, Real vs Fake, these distinctions don’t exist because we walk with all these spirits simultaneously.

Including work by:
John Michael Boling and Javier Morales (New York), Jesse Hulcher (Pittsburgh), John Kilduff (Youtube/California), Jesse Mclean (Pittsburgh), Shana Moulton (California), Nanny Lynn (Michigan), Happeh (Youtube/California), Guthrie Lonergan (California), Kathleen Daniel aka Silicious (Youtube/Germany)

8pm Performance Program

Dungeon Majesty

Dungeon Majesty is a cable-access show where 4 girls play D&D and act out some scenes in front of a green screen with super-cheesy special effects and pen-and-paper animations. Its creators will be appearing live unveiling a new episode for the first time.

Paper Rad
Everyone’s favorite Providence psychedelic neon art troupe returns with a new installation and performance freak out.

E*rock

Portland-based multimedia performance-artist does it all. A graphic designer, founder of the Audio Dregs record label and publisher of Thumb zine, he also knows how to turn a party out.

Warhammer48k

New Orleans-bound heavy psych-rock powerhouse emerges from the woods of Missouri to rattle your brain and buttfuck your dreams into oblivion. You’ll never get to heaven if you’re scared of getting high!

Copy

Fuzzed out synths, layered melodies, drawn out bass sequences, and drum machine generated handclaps get the party moving PDX-style.

Ride the Snake Down to the Lake
A five minute performance by Jeffrey-Elaine Shotzenberger

DJ Logan Bay

DJ Ben Fasman

event opens at 6pm ($10 donation after 8)

SATURDAY APRIL 21ST DETAILS

We follow up the opening of our group exhibition with an encore night of action and adventure.

Performance Program

8pm Video shorts program curated by e*rock
Portland and more scene videos featuring advanced animation.

9pm Performance Program

Mayor Daley
As-yet undisputed heirs to the Chicago noise-rock throne. This three-piece combines vocals that aren’t words and noises that aren’t sounds to enable the sonic boomboxing match.

Cave
A Terry Plumming CD release show for this Columbia MO epic psychedelic noise prog-rock ensemble.

Juiceboxxx

Milwaukee’s teen heartthrob party rap superstar returns for his first Chicago show of the year. Do you want to do it?

Panther

Panther’s music is a hard match of damaged soul, falsetto disco and broken synth fueled freakouts tainted with throbbing bass, minimalistic hooks and jittery dance routines.

Soft Serve
CD release show for Eleanor Balson’s fourth album, this time on No Sides Records. Noisy beats and retarded melodies dance backwards around surrealist imagery and trip up while riding down the escalator backwards.

DJ Lord Drol

doors open at 6pm ($10 donations after 8)

RPG OG'S: Take One: Erol Otus

Who better to start out a series of posts on the OG's of RPG than legendary D&D artist Erol Otus. Erol has to be one of the craziest game artists out there, some how capturing the epic fantasy and lunacy of never ending adventure in every single image. He is probably most noted for his cover paintings ( D&D Basic Set, Deities & Demigods) and the illustrations he did of Cthulhu characters found only in the highly sought after Cthulhu Mythos section of the first printing of Deities & Demigods, legal issues caused those characters to be removed in future editions.

This guy Jeff has a good collection of his images up on his Erol Otus Shrine. Glyn also has a nice Erol Otus Gallery up. And lucky for us contemporary module makers Goodman Games have recognized his genius and hired Erol to do some art for recent projects. Check out his newer stuff if you are still a non believer. So in conclusion Erol Otus we salute you!

The space host the grand opening of the exhibitions as well as a series of film screenings musical performances, workshops and parties.
